Want to (re)read Animorphs?

Have you seen posts about the series by K A Applegate around tumblr and thought “What happens in these books?!” Are you like me and read them all as a kid but want to reread now? Maybe you just read them last month and still have the brainworms from them (heh). Maybe you want to be unmarketable by diving into a kids’ series from the 90s for the next year or just want a long-term alternative to doomscrolling?

Whatever your reason, do you want to make it a book club in the spirit of Dracula Daily?

So it looks like the poll suggests a one-book-a-week read-a-long, so it will take over a year to complete. Don’t let that intimidate you. You can always pick up at any time – either starting with an earlier book later into the year or by picking up with the book of the week as the Animorphs series was made to be largely self-contained in the individual books.

As previously stated, I’m not emailing out the bits and pieces like Dracula Daily. I don’t want to get in a fight with Scholastic and for no particular reason the year 2025 seems like an excellent year to support libraries. If your library or library app doesn’t have the ebooks or audiobooks apparently there are also PDFs of the entire series floating around on the internet with the authors’ blessing. Who knows, maybe you’re lucky enough to be in a position to have the physical copies.

Yeah. There are a lot of books. At one per week it will take over a year, but the books themselves are very short. If you’re unfamiliar with the series you might be confused by the addition of Megamorphs and Chronicles books meant to be read between the main 54. No worries, I’ve made a schedule.

I decided (admittedly quite arbitrarily) to start the first week of March to try to give a buffer between the idea and the start date for interest to spread before the first book. The idea is to finish each week’s book by Saturday but there’s no pressure if you fall behind or skip a book or join late. I can’t guarantee you’ll avoid spoilers, but I’m hoping people tag with the number or title of the book or some such method to discuss them. Idk, I’ve never done something like this before.

for my first re-read in 2023 i was taking screenshots of my nonsearchable pdfs via my kindle app orz

for this reread i am borrowing the ebooks via libby (digital library app which i would really really encourage you to download and take advantage of if you are in the u.s.!!! i listen to all my audiobooks through there are get all my ebooks there too!!!) and taking screenshots, then adding the highlights in my phone photo editing app. the files are pretty dynamic in that i can adjust font, font size, margins, line spacing, and background color. i prefer to read on a sepia tone background with large font, but prefer to post screenshots of a white background with small font.

for my comparative posts where i want to line up a lot of excerpts one after the other i will also make sure the aspect ratio for each image is the same. if i'm just posting a snippet by itself i just crop it however i need to in order to fit the text i want to reference. i do all my image editing on my phone using the built in android photo editing/gallery app.

Review: Library of Congress Classification (LCC) System

See, this is where I get into the weird shit when it comes to ratings... Everything is on the table, no matter how obscure or trivial!

In my quest to find an acceptable manner to organize my books, because I do not comprehend 'vibes' and Dewey Decimal is kinda nonsense, I looked into LCC, which is what most academic libraries use. Boy how, it's quite a fantastic system, built with more care, I've grown very fond and familiar of the system.

Spoiler warning? Where we're going, we don't need spoiler warnings!

Strengths

Unlike the Dewey system, which uses strictly numbers, the LCC uses an alpha-numeric code with at least four distinct sections. As an example, here is a typical LCC number:

PS 3563 .I4215 C3 1963

PS refers to the Class and Subclass. Class P is Literature, and subclass PS is American Literature.

3563 is the Topic Number. This number is more arbitrary, but usually follows a pattern that makes sense when in a large library. It has an associated topic, which can be found for free in the Library of Congress Classification Schedule PDFs. In this case, 3563 is American Authors 1961-2000 whose last names begin with M.

.I4215 and C3 are Cutter Numbers, alpha-numeric renditions of usually the author's last name, editor, or other specific distinguishing characteristic. In this case, under the Topic 3563, Cutter Numbers are assigned from the second letter of the author's last name, which is the first Cutter Number. The second number, C3, translates to Ca, and refers to the title of the book.

And lastly, 1964 refers to the date of this edition's publication.

With all four sections of this LCC Number, every book, even different editions of the same book, has it's own number. This is in contrast to Dewey System

The Dewey Decimal System (DDS) is broken into ten broad categories, each running from X00 to X99 of a given hundred. As a book gets more specific in its content, the number gets more specific. For example,

800 = Literature

810 = American Literature in English

813 = American Fiction in English

813.0 = American Fiction in English by Type

813.08 = American Genre Fiction in English

813.087 = American Adventure Fiction in English

813.0876 = American Speculative Fiction in English

813.08762 = American Science Fiction in English

813.087622 = American Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction in English

813.0876220 = American Post-Nuclear Apocalyptic Science Fiction (in English)

This, 813.0876220, is the full, canonical DDS number for A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr.... and also Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick (which is ironically not under the cyberpunk classification, by the way).

To me, at least, PS 3563 .I4215 C3 1963 is far more easy to understand than 813.0876220. This is often why libraries use a different, usually simply Last Name based organization for their fiction.

Weakness:

There are a couple of weaknesses, as it is an American centric system. Class E and F are both American History, but I can forgive this as it is a system invented by the Library of Congress for books to be used for Congress (at least, originally).

Another minor gripe is that sometimes, it can be difficult to figure out where a book should be classified, especially if it could be classified under two areas. This can usually be mitigated, but with more fringe or obscure materials, becomes more of an issue.

My Dungeon Master Tool Kit Part 4 - Affordable-ish Tablet for RPG PDFs Finally, the Dungeoneering Dad has come back to his Dungeon Master Kit series (part 1, part 2, and part 3).  Why PDFs? As much as I love the usefulness, lack of eye strain, and, dare I say it, the beauty of hard copy books, I've found myself using PDF copies of RPGs more and more. They take up less space (duh), support smaller publishers, and are typically cheaper.  As of now, I have an online library of 693 items at DriveThruRPG (...not gonna lie, that's a bit embarrassing).  An actual gamer using a tablet in sheer ecstasy.  Why a Tablet? less to cart around access to a large library of PDFs can search books electronically feel like you're from the future Why a Fire Tablet? Rich Corinthian leather case. Look, straight up, if you can afford an iPad, the Fire tablet can't compete. However, if you're budget-minded, I recommend the Fire. (It was known as the "Kindle Fire," but they seem to have dropped the "Kindle" part.) As I've mentioned a few times in ages past (linky link and linky link), I use a Fire for my RPG PDFs.  Nice things about the Fire: Cheap-ish. Amazon puts them on sale multiple times a year (holidays, Prime Day, etc.). Expandable storage with an SD Card. From my understanding, you need an adapter to use an SD Card with an iPad. Since a Fire isn't a normal tablet, there are a few easy ways to add files for use with the official Kindle app. 1. Use the "Send to Kindle" website to upload them: link You'll need to use this particularly if the PDF files are large. 2. Email the PDF.  Each Amazon account has a "send-to-Kindle" email address (e.g., "Best_DM_Ever@kindle.com"). Simply email the PDF as an attachment to that address and it will show up in your Kindle app library before too long. 3. Connect your Fire to your PC and transfer them that way. 4. Get an SD Card, put that into your PC, load up the card, and then pop that into your Fire. Amazon Books

I'm not much of a reader.

I'm not proud of that fact.

I was big into comic books for a while there, but these days I hardly even read those either.

Despite this, I have made several genuine efforts over the years to try to read more and hopefully develop the habit. While I did manage to read a few books, I never kept the habit.

The good news is that if I ever do decide to pick up the habit again, I have made it as easy as possible for me to do so.

I knew that to develop the habit, I had to eliminate as many friction points as possible and make it as enjoyable as possible. For me, that meant involving technology.

When I was in school, carrying several textbooks around was a pain and I had always wished I could just have them all in electronic format on a few devices. I decided that if I was going to get into reading, I didn't want to do so on paperbacks or hard cover books: I wanted to do it on electronic devices.

Now, I could have gone the DRM-free route, which would have provided advantages of its own; but to have the convenience of having access to my entire library on whatever device I was using without managing my own cloud back-end, I would need a SaaS reading platform of some kind. Additionally, depending on the platform I chose, I might gain access to more potential devices I could read from as well.

I tried a few different platforms over the years, each with their own dedicated devices, but ultimately the one I chose was Amazon Books, for a few reasons:

I really want an e-ink tablet for reading on, and my options are:

Device that locks you into B&N purchases only (Nook)

Device that doesn't force you to only use Amazon, but does firmly push it. Don't you want to give more market power to Amazon? It only has a stranglehold on like 90% of the indie and audio market. It's only toxic and not downright fatal in how it treats most of its authors. (Kindle)

Device that can't connect to any ebook apps or stores. If you buy a book that isn't offered in PDF form, you'll have to jailbreak it to read (meaning you're probably still going to mostly go to Amazon for business.) (Remarkable)

Device that runs Android OS such that you could juggle reading apps for all the different stores/libraries and have your options. But the company that made it is almost certainly on the CCP's leash. Has color options. (Boox)

I can't even get a clear answer on if this one lets you interface with other book stores or if you have to install PDFs/epubs. All modern reviews apparently expect people to already know this information. (kobo)

Because of the way I manage ebooks, Boox is basically the only viable option for me. I just always hesitate when I see a product is Chinese because of CCP spyware stories. Is there a functional difference between that and Google spying on me? Does it even matter when my drawing tablet is from a Chinese company? The answer to both of these questions is no, but I'm still gonna need a moment.

I hope they don't manufacture Boox tablets in the province with all the Uyghur slave labor. They probably are. I think most tablets have at least some components where that's the case.

Guh... I'm gonna give it a few weeks minimum so it feels less like I'm salt-buying something no one got me for Christmas, even though I didn't ask anyone for this. Do I really need to spend a ton of money on an e-ink anyway?
